We are thrilled to announce and congratulate Sharon Singleton for being named the 2016 CareerSafe Safety Educator of the Year! She received the honor at the Association for Career and Technical Education awards banquet in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 30th. Ms. Singleton received a $5,000 award to use in her Bonnie Brae classroom.
On campus, Ms. Singleton helps prepare our students for the transition out of Bonnie Brae. She works hard to teach them important life skills including teamwork, self-advocacy, and relationship building. Ms. Singleton created and implemented the “Brae Builders” program in 2008. The program enables Bonnie Brae boys to volunteer their time on local Habitat for Humanity build sites.
Prior to participating in the Brae Builders program, Bonnie Brae students need to complete safety training through CareerSafe. After completing the preliminary course, they continue on to complete an OSHA 10-hour course. The training enables the Bonnie Brae Students to begin to develop skills necessary to increase their ability to secure employment.
Ms. Singleton credits the training programs with keeping the students safe and the program incident-free. She truly believes in the importance of safety and motivates her students to make smart and informed decisions. Ms. Singleton recognizes the lack of confidence boys have upon their arrival at Bonnie Brae. She sees the life-changing transformative effects that Bonnie Brae has on her students, one of which is increased confidence.
