BraeVision Katrina Project
posted 10/31/2005 | archive
In this innovative job skills program, Bonnie Brae students learn to operate video cameras, edit their work and star in videos under the direction of Tom "Coach" Melvin.
Students have worked on a variety of projects, including a weekly TV show (broadcast throughout the Bonnie Brae campus), a Fire Prevention video for Bernards Township, Public Service Announcements for the Methany School's "Miles for Methany" fundraiser, and a special infomercial on the Bernards Township Chamber of Commerce's recent Katrina Relief Effort.
Braevision's high-tech video production studio is located on Bonnie Brae's main campus, and has hosted local cable TV shows. The young men at Bonnie Brae assisted with the Bernards Township Chamber of Commerce Katrina Relief on September 16, 2005 by helping to load boxes of necessary items into trucks to be taken to the victims in Houma, Louisiana.

Special thanks to The F.M. Kirby Foundation for providing needed funds toward renovations AND the Telecordia Pioneers Chapter 99 for donating two washers and dryers. The statewide need for residential facilities to serve youth at risk is dramatically increasing. Over the past year, there has been a great deal of exciting change and growth at Bonnie Brae!
In August 2005, we opened our new Community-Based Residential Treatment Program in New Brunswick. This new program houses five boys at any given time, and helps to prepare them to live independently. This month we are opening the newly renovated Metcalf Cottage to twelve of our youngest (ages 11-13) boys. We are now able serve a total of 90 boys.
Judge Harry Osborne founded Bonnie Brae in 1916. Bonnie Brae is a private, nonprofit, accredited (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) residential treatment and special education center for troubled boys, ages 11 to 18, from throughout New Jersey open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mission Statement: A haven where young men reclaim their potential through education and therapy.
A comprehensive treatment program enables troubled boys to learn the personal and life skills needed to return to their homes, communities and society as independent, self-sufficient, and productive citizens, and to realize their full life potential.
