Roebling Cottage Re-Opening September 16th 2004 at 3:00 pm
posted 11/15/2004 | archive

The History
In 1928, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Roebling and their son Siegfried donated funds to build “Paul’s Cottage” in memory of a younger son, Paul Roebling. The Roeblings, who resided at Boulderwood in Bernardsville, were known for their generosity in giving to worthy causes, institutions and the poor. The name was later changed to “Roebling Cottage” to grant recognition to the family for their donation.
The Need
Throughout New Jersey, hundreds of troubled children are losing the services they so desperately need. Several residential treatment centers have recently closed, leaving children in placements, such as juvenile detention centers, where their problems are not addressed. Other children have been placed out-of-state, separating them from family, friends and communities.
Bonnie Brae is responding to this statewide crisis by expanding its capacity. The newly rebuilt Roebling Cottage will bring Bonnie Brae’s capacity from 64 to 80 boys.
In October 2004, Bonnie Brae will undertake a new project: to renovate Kiwanis Cottage, an older building on campus that is currently vacant. This renovation will give Bonnie Brae the capacity to house twelve additional boys, ages 11-13, by January 2005. This cottage, especially designated for the youngest boys, will provide them with their own living environment; free of the pressures to “grow up too fast” that often result from living with the older teens. Bonnie Brae is actively seeking contributions from the community in support of this project. For more information, please call the Bonnie Brae Development Office, 908-647-4700.
